Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull commends builder, Paynter Dixon for leading the way with Women in Construction

28th April, 2016...Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Minister for Women Michalia Cash visited the Paynter Dixon Jimbelunga construction site on Wednesday to speak with many of Paynter Dixon’s female employees. Ms Cash and Mr Turnbull spoke to each employee about their roles, background and the industry’s approach to Women in Construction.

Paynter Dixon Queensland are enabling women to forge successful careers in the building industry, unlocking extra support for women with the launch of Master Builders’ Advancing Women in Building and Construction Program. Master Builders Australia will be provided with $250,000 in grant funding to deliver the pilot as part of the Australian Government’s Women’s Leadership and Development Strategy.

Women account for just 11 per cent of the construction workforce and they leave the industry at a rate almost 40 per cent higher than men. Diverse workplaces have been proven to be more productive and deliver better returns to the bottom line. In an industry which is fundamental to the transition of our economy, the growth that stems from a more gender-balanced workforce is in the best interests of Australia. The pilot programme will encourage more women to enter into and lead successful careers within the Construction Industry.

The Prime Minister said the Advancing Women in Building and Construction Program would not only help women in a traditionally male-dominated field, but highlight other problems plaguing the industry. "One of the important elements too, is ensuring the rule of law prevails in the construction sector," said Mr Turnbull.

With 64 years’ experience within the Queensland Commercial Construction industry, Paynter Dixon credits its success to the experienced and diverse project teams across Queensland. “With a commitment to gender equality, we at Paynter Dixon are attracting and retaining the best talent possible” said Mr Johnston.

With a growing number of women in Senior Management positions and across project teams, Paynter Dixon is certainly an industry leader. A positive and diverse work culture is vital and Paynter Dixon are doing their part to foster gender equality within the Construction industry.
